Can you the same SD card in a different camera?

I already have an 8GB in my Panasonic Lumix camera and want to switch it into a new one, a Fuji Finepix (recent TSV). I don't want to have to go out and buy a new card if I don't have to. But will I lose the other pics I have on there? Do I have to re-format the card? I already have those pics backed up on my computer, but i like to leave the orginal pics on the cards, so I prefer not to lose them.
