SueDone and Indy-Blonde2 -- I just went by what the guy from the Clickfree site told me. He said it might be possible, but couldn't guarantee it since, according to him, my device was not compatible. That said, it probably would have worked, but I came across a few reports from people who had a bad experience when trying to do so. Since I didn't have that many files, using a flash drive (actually I backed my files up on two different ones--a double backup) was the best option for me.
Glb613--Unfortunately, I don't have an extra external HD, just the Clickfree. Could now probably use the HD I'll be taking out of my old computer for future backups. As far as DVDs and CDs, couldn't use those on my old PC. I won't go into details, but a lot of things didn't work as they should on the old thing. I didn't want to spend the time or money to fix them (although some things, like the DVD problem, probably would have been easy to correct). Since I have plenty of flash drives and not that many files, I saved my files to them. As you said, "always have more than one copy of anything you can't afford to lose." I have a spreadsheet I have to keep for my sister for SS of all her expenses. I have that backed up on three different flash drives. I'm not taking any chances!

Flash/thumb drives should never be used as a backup device. They are too easily corrupted or erased. They are fine to transfer data or as a temporary second copy. Do yourself a favor and get a couple of external hard drives. The best is cloud storage. It's off site, automatic and reasonably priced. If you have really precious photos, burn them to a DVD/CD and store in your safe deposit box.

Microsoft has a free program called Laplink. You can transfer all your files from XP to Windows 8 or 8.1. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/xp/default.aspx?ocid=XPEOS_D_Standard_Familiarity_STND-OC-H2...

Glb613--Thanks for the advice. Looks like I have cloud storage available to me now, so I'll probably take advantage of that option. I can also now save files and photos to DVDs which will be great (as I said before, that option wasn't there for me).
Stardust2--Thanks for the info about Laplink. I've already transferred my XP files, but it's good to know about this.
