In other words, a separate answering machine that you plug into your existing telephone. I know stand-alones are becoming dinosaurs, but we already have enough good phones and don't want to buy a whole new set with ans. machine.
I also know there aren't too many of these in existence. I was googling and found that the AT&T 1739 and 1740 were pretty common, but need to know about 2 of their features if anyone has one of those units. 1) Can you turn off the continuous beep for messages that have been recorded? I have pets that sleep near the phone and I don't want them to be disturbed by a constant beep, and 2) Does that unit record live phone conversations? The last unit I had, you could press a Record button while you were talking and the conversation would be recorded.
TIA!
