Re: Beware of internet provider technicians

Follow-up:

The router was moved by the cable tech to the other end of our home and placed on top of an eight foot tall bookshelf for better reception. It has helped. We and all the residents of this area will continue to deal with the perpetual interference from a local radio tower that walks over transmission and slows down the speed.

For some reason, whatever it is, the rented router performs better. Our purchased Netgear was abysmally slow. Wish its purchase would have solved the problem.

Disabling the hotspot is not the fix I had hoped for. It limits the number of times the computer basically stops functioning but now someone or something is remotely using my computer. It is bizarre to say the least. The computer times out. I receive a "not connected to the network" message. I reboot 3-4-5 times. Each time I try a search. When I do type in the search box a list of recent searches cascades below. They are not mine. They are highlighted in a different colored font. As many as 5-6 searches in a half hour or so are listed in the history under my search bar that I have never done. ?????

So someone has access to my network. I have changed my password. Still the same problem. So speed and now security are issues here. We are sending our computer to the manufacturer for troubleshooting.

I will contact the FCC again and also the corporate department of the cable company. I want my network connectivity, reliable speed and secure network back.

Are you changing your router's password?

Well it probably runs better because the FCC just issued warnings to companies about throttling speeds to customers. So...this company (that you yet to mention its name) is probably acting on its best behavior right now. They don't want the FCC looking through records and seeing that they were slowing speeds down, then getting busted for doing it. In fact...I think we will all be seeing improved speeds while this FCC stuff is going on. Enjoy it for now. In a few months, when this all dies down, companies will be up to their tricks again and secretly start slowing speeds on and off.

Re: Beware of internet provider technicians

Also, since you first started this thread a long time ago, I learned that not all new modems have that feature. While I am with Comcast, and can see xfinity listed in the wireless connection options while I am at home, Comcast confirmed that this is not coming from my router. They said it is my neighbors. They said that my modem does not include this feature. I validated this by going to the modem site, and the option to control that feature is not availanle to me. Comcast confirmed that it not being available to me confirms that my modum does not include this feature. My current modum was recently replaced with an older modum from Comcast a few months ago. So it's definitely one of the latest models....then again, you never know with Comcast.

Re: Beware of internet provider technicians

I have Comcast and recently received a new router/modem in the mail with directions on how to replace my older modem.
I replaced it and immediately noticed that there was an Xfinity option in addition to my home Internet which is secured and a few others that probably belong to my neighbors.
I called Comcast about a billing problem and the tech told me that even though I own my own personal router and it is hooked up, the new device they sent me was a router and modem in one and I could just disconnect my personal router if I wanted to.
Just 2 days ago, I received the message stating that I couldn't connect to the Internet. My devices wwere all showing a full strong strength on my home option.
I tried to get onto the hotspot Xfinity option with my I-pad using my user name and password. I did sign in on that.
I agree with the OP that something funny is going on. My Internet is very slow now. My WEP is locked and secure, but something is slowing me down. I do not trust Comcast and they are so expensive. My basic service cable bill and Internet is $209 a month. I have no premium channels.
I am in the process of looking for a new provider.

You need to call Comcast and have a tech come to your home. He/she can check your setup. WEP is an old security protocol for a wireless network, and not secure. I am using WPA2, even with an old internet radio.

You should sign into your account online, and check your service options before you move to another provider.
