I wore a work-related headset for 50 years........and now I find I can't hear anybody who is more than two feet away from me.

If you go to cnet dot com there is an entire section showing nothing but on-ear headphones. Just click REVIEWS in the homepage banner. Then the left side of screen breaks it down by price, brand and type of headphone.

"Best" is in the ears of the beholder. A headphone that's best for one person may be horrible to someone else. Most of the ones out there sound pretty darn good, but how they fit on the ears/head can affect the rating. Someone with a very small head will likely prefer a different headphone from someone with a very large head. Someone who's used to music with a lot of bass might prefer a headphone that's bass heavy. If you can find a store that will let you try them on, and you're not grossed out by being one of many who've tried them on, then that might be your best option.
There was a story many years ago in either Stereo Review or Audiophile magazine of a speaker designer who made very good speakers, but they were always just slightly deficient in one frequency range. When interviewed the designer always insisted they sounded perfect to him. One night an editor for the magazine accompanied the designer to the orchestra and sat in his box alongside of him and discovered the problem. That specific part of the theater had an acoustic issue that degraded that same frequency range. The speaker designer was designing speakers to match what he heard live. To everyone else they needed tweaking, but to him they were perfect. Depending on what you're used to hearing can affect which headphones are "best" for you.

@Meowingkitty, I like Bose. I used the sports earphones for years. Will check it out.
@SilleeMee, will check there as well.
@gardenman, no substitute for trying them out. LM
