Backspacing not working correctly - help

All of a sudden, when I need to backspace to make a correction or change a word or sentence, it will back up only one space and then an annoying tone starts beeping at me every time I hit the back space key and it won't move. I have to reposition my cursor to continue. I'm sure I've accidentally hit a button that is causing this, but I have no idea what I could have done. Anybody familiar with this problem and how to fix it? TIA!!{#emotions_dlg.crying}
