Re: AppleCare for iMac computers

6 Year Mac owner here - haven't bought the extended care and haven't needed it, either.

I am looking into purchasing a new iMac desktop and have been reading about the Applecare extended warranty. Does anyone have AppleCare, is it worth the extra fee?

I purchased it when I bought my first Apple computer.  Used it twice for questions I could have found at the Apple forums.  When I did have a repair, the hinge broke on my iMac, my Apple Care had expired.  Not worth it for me and I don't recommend it for anyone who has basic computer knowledge.

Good to know. This will be my first iMac. I guess I really need to read up on what the Applecare covers. I know the coverage just changed tthis month to cover accidents. I'm not sure all that's included and what's not.

You'll want the AppleCare+ version that will cover accidents; this is the newer version, which was inspired by the AppleCare+ coverage for iPhone.

We've always had Apple Care with our Apple products.  It gives us peace of mind.  When we have used it, the tech support has been superb.  We believe it's well worth the extra fee.

If you do purchase a new iMac, you'll be in love.  I'm typing on an older one now.  I'd hate to go back to a PC.

@homedecorator, my electronics are all mostly apple products.  I have 2 iPods, an iPhone 6+, an iPad Pro and a MacBook Pro as well as beatsx Bluetooth headphones.  The only device I bought Apple care for was the phone.  I have never used it and won't be buying it again.  LM

Oh wow, that's good to know @Lilysmom! The downside for me is that it's only good for  3 years, and the first year is included already. Sounds like you know about Apple. I will say they really push Applecare in the Apple Store when looking around at any item.

Re: AppleCare for iMac computers

the guy helping me buy my mac book pro advised against it.... Saying that most of the problems he sees happen AFTER the care is up so he felt it wasn't worth it.

If "they really push Apple Care in the Apple Store", then the atmosphere has changed for the worse.  My experiences at Apple Retail Stores were different.  I never felt pressure to buy anything.  I always got good advice from the salesmen.  At one time I read that the salesmen were NOT on commission so the amount they sold didn't figure into their pay.  I wonder if that's changed.  If it has, it's too bad.

The salesman I dealt with was insistent on Applecare for any of the products I looked at. That's what really made me question it. Everywhere I turned was another salesperson talking to customers about Applecare. I'm not sure if there is any incentive for them to sell the warranty, but they were definitely pushing it. It seems like good coverage for a fair price, but the sales approach was a turn off. Still deciding, but the iMacs look wonderful!
