Ahhhh....ok. The reason it was taking up more room is that the old operating system will not be deleted until the new one has been installed successfully. Apple does this to insure your device isn't 'bricked' in case the new installation fails for some reason.

Gee whiz.....sorry about the double post. My fault entirely -- trying to get formatting fixed and ended up posted twice.
Decided to compose in a text edit app before posting since the Q boards are notorious for losing long posts before you can hit the 'submit' button. Copy and paste just didn't work out.

Re: long posts. It's a timing issue more than a length issue. If you take too long to compose a post it'll assume you walked away and end the session even though it looks like everything is normal. Only when your post disappears do you learn you took too long. Any time you think there's a risk, simply copy the post before submitting and then if it doesn't post, you can paste it into the empty spot and the forum won't care how long the post is. Any long posts that I don't want to write again, I'll copy and then if it doesn't post, just paste it back in and then it'll post fine. There's a countdown clock hidden inside the forum somewhere and if you go a second too long composing a post, your post will just evaporate when you hit Submit. Copy and Paste is your best friend for long posts.

Thanks gardenman. I didn't realize it was a timing issue.

iOS 8 did not change how AirPlay works. To get your iPad to stream to a television if the app/movie/TV show doesn't have AirPlay enabled, you've always had to activate it through the Control Center since iOS 7 was released.
No, you didn't. There was an icon on the player that allowed you to switch to Apple TV. Had it always been the way you claim, I wouldn't have had any trouble when I updated to IOS 8.1. I've been watching movies and TV shows through my iPad and Apple TV since I bought the Apple TV. That was long before the most recent update. I'm done arguing about this. Thanks for the help.

Gail,
You made my point exactly.
If the 'player'/app has an AirPlay icon, that means the developer wrote the code to allow the app to stream to a television through the AppleTV.
If the developer did not allow activation of AirPlay --- in other words, there is no icon to tap sending the stream to the television -- within his/her app you have to send the stream to AppleTV by using the Control Center.
The reason you were having problems streaming from certain apps since the upgrade to iOS 8 is that the apps you were using had not been updated by the developer. Apple has no control over when or if developers update their apps to take advantage of the new features in an operating system.
My suggestion is to leave a review on the App Store, telling the developer of the apps that have ceased streaming to AppleTV from within the app, to issue an update reinstating that feature.
For everyone else reading this who is totally confused......you can view whatever is on your iPad/iPhone screen by using the Control Center -- swiping up from the bottom of your iPad, tapping AppleTV, and selecting Mirroring. If a developer has built in the ability to stream through AppleTV you will not need to go to the Control Center.
Gail and I have been posting on the electronics board for many years.....back in the day when the battles were about Windows vs. Mac. At least she's on the 'bright' side now having converted to Apple.....had a sip of the Kool-Aid.

You're welcome. I tend to be wordy on my big Brother and NFL posts, so over the years I've learned to copy and paste to save myself frustration when they disappear. From time to time I'll forget to copy one and there's a moment of panic as I wait to see if I made the time limit or not. Then it'll either disappear and I'll pound on my poor defenseless keyboard, or breathe a sigh of relief when it pops up. It can be just a two word post but if you wait to long to hit submit, it'll be gone. You can also write a thousand words and as long as you get them written before the time limit expires, it'll post just fine. Timing is everything on these forums.

Gardenman, I haven't sipped the Kool-Aid. I still have a Windows computer and complain about Apple when they deserve it. My main reason for switching to Apple is, I wanted a 27 inch AIO and the price difference between Apple and HP wasn't that much.
I got an e-mail from Apple support and they allowed me to download the audiobook again and I did. So as of this moment, my complaints about Apple have been resolved. It still doesn't mean I like the changes they made with the past updates.
