IMO that is a mute 'slide' not a button.  With the slide you have to move the volume tab one way until the sound is muted and then to get the sound back , you have to slide it the other way to get the volume back.  It usually takes me some adjusting to get the volume back where it was and I want it.

 

With the mute button, you tap and there is no sound and then tap again and the sound is back exactly where it was.  Perfect!!
