Anyone use the iPhone Viber App Usefor travel?

I will be traveling next month and I am not tech savvy! A friend suggested using the Viber app when traveling so I can text and call home without a fee. My question is, do I turn my airplane mode on to avoid data charges since I do not have an unlimited data plan? Any help is appreciated as I do not want to run up my cellphone bill with unnecessary data charges! I think the hotel has free wifi I can use in the room, but I was thinking about when I was out and about.

Viber is not free. You should read the FAQ. http://www.viber.com/

Check with your wireless company about service and charges outside of your home area.
