I bought a new printer recently, and I just didn't download the software since I didn't have a CD drive. It isn't really necessary for me to download it, is it? (I know this is a stupid question, but I just wasn't sure. I didn't see why I needed it though.)

Yes, you need it. You may not need to extras provided but, you need the drivers to make it work properly.

Thanks, I'll go online and try to do this. I hope it will be easy. I bought it a month ago, and it's been working fine so I didn't realize it was necessary.
Edited to add: Thank you for telling me I needed to do this. I just downloaded the drivers.

Nick Nack - your computer probably automatically installed the drivers. Otherwise it wouldn't work at all. These days computers will automatically do that.
I never install all the software for printers either. It's always a bunch of junk that you just don't need. As long as you have the drivers installed you should be good.
You can go to the website of the manufacturer and follow the prompts to software/drivers/etc and attempt a driver install. It should tell you if you already have the right/current ones.

If you want to the most up to date drivers, get them from the manufacturer.

I hope I didn't mess it up then, by installing a less current version. I didn't install any software, just the drivers.

I know you said no HP, but ours is a laserjet and does not take ink. it is model HP LaserJet Professional P1102w -- we have 2. Paid $99 -- DH was so surprised that they had come down in price. HTH
PS... it will do the wifi hookup automatically and it is light.

We also have the Canon MG5520. It's reg. $150 & they have it on Amazon for $60 with free shipping. I love that they use individual color cartridges so you only have to replace the color that is out instead of replacing 1 single color cartridge which is only out of one of the colors.

jackthebear... don't know if this information is relevant or not... the printer we have works on the new laptop perfectly after downloading updated software. The old laptop never worked wifi style with this printer but I was probably doing something wrong.

My preference is Canon (used many models, always very pleased), and I've found the best prices on Amazon or B&H Photo Video (top-notch personalized service and support at B&H).
