Any suggestions on a problem with my iPad?

I have the 1st generation iPad and for the entire time I have owned it, it would occasionally stop the application I was using and go back to the "desktop". If I opened the application I was using, ie Words with Friends, a book, or the internet, it would go right back to where I was.

Now this is happening with increasing frequency and it is not just with one application. I have the software on my home iMac updated with the latest version and the operating system software on my iPad is current. I have the 64GB model and 22 free GBs available--so it isn't a storage issue.

It happens in Safari browser and in WWF. I use these the most but it has also happened when using other applications.

Any suggestions? I have not looked at the troubleshooting section on Apple yet but thought I would ask the thoughts of the folks on these boards.
