I'm the OP and my mother got another call from the same number that is suppose to be a collection agency. How many times can I call the FTC? I have to think if this was on the up and up why wouldn't they send my mother a letter if they have tried many times to reach her and don't? My mother is elderly and doesn't need this aggravation!

I would call and file a complaint with FTC. Consumer Reports has a cover story about scamming the elderly. It is big business. It is wonderful you are there to help your mom or she would probably be taken for money.

I would call and file a complaint with FTC. Consumer Reports has a cover story about scamming the elderly. It is big business. It is wonderful you are there to help your mom or she would probably be taken for money.

Thanks for the link. That poor woman conned out of most of her life savings. I hope there is a place in hell for these scammers. I have called the FTC twice on this and the police needing donations. I really don't think it helps.

These phone calls (and there are emails doing similar things) are upsetting, @Jordan2.  Regarding the collection agencies, specifically:  in many cases they run checks and find anyone who might be remotely associated with the person who owes money.  They even look at who the neighbors might be, in some cases.  And then they start contacting everyone, and it's legal for them to do this.  The reputable agencies will stop calling if notified that they're calling the wrong person.

My mother got another one of these calls that come from another state, don't leave a message, and when I try to look up the number on line it seems fishy. I am so SICK of these people trying to scam money out of poor unsuspecting people. Surely there must be something that can be done about these annoying phone calls? I said before your home should be a safe haven, I cringe whenever the phone rings.

I would call your Mom's phone provider, and see if they offer a phone number blocking service. Some do, and some don't.

If they don't, and you are willing to invest in a new phone for her, there are some phone brands out there that block phone numbers. Panasonic is one brand. 

There are also phone number blocking devices that are also available, too.

I'm the OP and forgive me if I sound like a broken record but what is up with all the scam phone calls? My mother gets calls almost everyday from the same numbers. They are relentless! She doesn't pick them up, she has caller id. When I look up the numbers on the Internet of course there is no name (privacy issue) attached to the number and it says this number is attached to scamming. I don't report them any more because what's the use?

Jordan2, it appears that the only recourse you have to "stopping" all the calls

is to do as the previous poster recommended:

This is what I had to do myself to stop all the calls on an unlisted phone number.  Most of it is Robo calls (no one there), but there are alot of companies that target 'Seniors' also.

I honestly understand you frustration. I was pretty upset too, because we have a private\unlisted phone number. It doesn't even seem to matter.

We were getting all different kinds of survey phone calls, charities calling, and scams, and telemarketing calls, too.

Due to the kindness of others posting about it here, I kept "nomorobo" in mind. I decided to look into it again for us, since we switched to the newer VOIP phone service.

It won't work with a regular old landline phone service or with cell. service, but it will work with the newer Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services to block all of those annoying phone calls. It's a free service, too.

You can check their website to see if your Mom's phone service qualifies for it, and if you would\she would be interested in the service.

If not, then like I already suggested in my last post, I would call her phone provider and see if they offer a phone blocking service. If you aren't able to call-don't have the time-you can usually find that info. on the phone service website.

Or, like I also said, there are phone brands out there that will physically block these calls, too, and there are also various phone blocking devices available, too. You would just have to do a little searching for them. 

I would give one of these options a try, since your Mom seems to be getting so many of these annoying phpne calls. Legitimate phone calls will still come through for her. Just the annoying ones will be blocked.

Just something for you to think about. I am happy that we now have a call-blocking service. It has given us more peace of mind.

That doesn;'t mean they'll do it- even though they're "supposed" to -- theres nothing to stop them unless you try getting the number and calling your phone company and reporting it to them- then they might be able to block it for you-HOWEVER- robocalls- just keep on calling- There should be a law - but they're too busy being calling to get re-elected!! NOW THOSE ARE CALLS THAT SHOULD BE BLOCKED FOR SURE!! Pain in the but.
