About to bite the bullet & get a new computer. Lots of help needed!

After scrubbing my old computer and reinstalling software, it is still as slow and unresponsive as ever. I think it's time to get a new one. The problem is, I am very uneducated when it comes to the terms and words used to describe the parts of a computer, such as GB and processor. I have no idea what most of them mean. Plus, I have no one to help me. So I have a bunch of questions.

The first is, is there any website for the technologically challenged, like me? One that describes what the terms mean when it comes to buying a new computer?

Secondly, what are the most important things to look for in a desktop? When I work, I like to have lots of windows open, plus I tend to save a lot of documents. I suppose I need to look for a big number in memory? What would be good?

Third, what other things should I look for that indicate a good computer that will last a long time? Any brands that are more dependable than others?

Finally, where should I shop? I spoke to someone on the Dell chat tool yesterday and was given an estimate for a computer that fits my needs. It was over $900 even though I told them my budget was $600-800. Not sure how to shop around since this computer was built just for me, plus I have no idea what to scrimp on and what to splurge on. I would prefer to pay off a computer over time, like through Easy Pays. But not sure if what they have here on the Q is a good deal or not. I thought buying through Dell would be wise, as they would just include the programs I need (not much more than the Word Suite), but I was disappointed by the high price they gave me.

Any other tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! TIA!
