AOL and accepting email only by permission??????

Hubby and I met up with a nice couple at a dance. We exchanged emails. Both of us have AOL. I wrote first and my email was returned saying that I was blocked because I did not have permission.

I have been an AOL person for a very long time. I know I can block individuals but I have never seen it happen anywhere that someone has to have permission before an email goes through. Can anyone explain this. I have googled and checked and cannot find it anywhere.
