Re: Why I am returning latest Dooney tsv

@Stevie Nix

You’re right. I saw the sheen before I ordered it when I first saw the bag on the Dooney site before I knew it was going to be a TSV. And I wondered about it but I had to see it in person, esp because the horsey look and saddle color are so ME. I knew that the TV lights were making it look shinier than it was, which is true, but there are so many better leathers that Dooney uses. I still think that some people who don’t understand really good leather have swayed QVC and Dooney to put that coating on when, in fact, my uncoated Florentine bags are just great and have aged beautifully. I’m surprised that the Dooney Toscana Florentine line seems to have ended. I have at least four of them and love every one! I’m eager to see Dooney adding fresh styles to Toscana or regular Florentine categories. My various classic Florentine satchels and Barlow bags are also faves. Oh well....

I’m hoping that someone at Dooney will read this. I’ve already called Dooney and Bourke. I bought my first Dooney in 1980 or so and fell in love with the quality the minute I saw it under glass in the department store. The TSV that arrived the other day is the (supposedly)Florentine”Selleria” satchel. I absolutely love the look and the color (I ordered the saddle tan)  but, as I wrote in my review right after I received the bag, I didn’t care for the finish on the leather which I thought cheapened  the look and feel significantly. I waited, looked at it daily, and tried to talk myself into keeping it. The bag is nice quality and looks wonderful from a distance. But that coating on the leather is so plastic looking. I just can’t keep it. It looks like vinyl. Over time, it will not age well, because you cannot develop a patina or rub out inevitable scratches on this treated Selleria leather vs. real Florentine.

I compared the Selleria bag, side by side, with other wonderful Dooney bags that I have, including my Florentines and Toscana Florentines  which are so yummy to the eye and to the touch. I have a Toscana Florentine satchel for which I paid $500 in which I never regretted buying at full price I thought it was a bargain then, and I still do. It’s the same saddle tan color as the Selleria tan, and it’s incredibly beautiful and still makes me sigh when I pick it up. It’s even leather lined. Ahhhhhhhh......

I’m not blaming Dooney as much is QVC because I have a feeling that QVC is pushing Dooney to come out with cheaper lines because QVC has some notion of price point that is detrimental to the Dooney brand. As I’ve written before,  my first Dooney cost me to $240 back around 1980, which was a lot of money to me at the time. But Mother always taught me to buy quality! So spending $500 or much more on a good bag now is what one would expect. QVC seems to want to downgrade the Dooney brand with lower quality and lower price points.

I still buy great, if pricey, Italian Dooneys from Dooney direct. I buy for the good leather, and when it’s not there I see no reason to keep the bag. I had ordered another of these Selleria bags from Dooney itself, and I canceled it this week simply because of that coating on the leather, which downgrades the look and feel of what should have been a gorgeous satchel. What a shame. What a disappointment.

I could see the leather was shiny by looking at the TSV. It was very obvious what you bought. I am not sure what point you are making about the Dooney's TSV.  Next time make sure you are more observant.

I knew that tv lights were making bag look shinier, which was true when I saw it in person, and I loved the style, so I needed to see it and feel it in person. Simple. No need to make this personal or to feel offended! It’s a great-looking bag, as I wrote, even in my review of it. Enjoy it.  I love the look and tan color, just not the leather.

Re: Why I am returning latest Dooney tsv

I bought the TSV crossbody in grey and sent it back the next day. Such a disappointment.

@libbyannEDo your Toscanas have the wide strap and if so do you like them?  I never ordered because I prefer the straps matching the bag although not a fan of the really skinny straps.

I am not making it personal because I asked a question. IMHO, it was obvious the leather was shiny even with the TV lights.

Re: Why I am returning latest Dooney tsv

All my Dooneys are either pebble leather or plain, matte leather. I see a lot of their bags that I love the style of in saffiano, and I think it also looks fake and cheap. Why are they putting those awful coatings over the leather? Not for me.......glad you sent yours back. Maybe they'll catch on.

How is “next time make sure you are more observant” not personal?

Re: Why I am returning latest Dooney tsv

Sorry it didn't work out. I picked up the miniwhen it was an encore. I had a credit to use up and it made the price even lower--at about half off. I was in need of a black mini crossbody.

Beautiful equestrian styling--not my usual thing. Lovely smell of leather with a sheen. Not as shiny as patent, but saffiano shiny. Did I think of it as "Florentine?" Nope. It may be from that region of Italy, they really shouldn't promote it as "Florentine."

I sat there thinking  where I'd seen a smilar bag and it dawned on me:  Patricia Nash. Only that leather is thinner and stiffer.

Again, too bad it didn't work out.

Re: Why I am returning latest Dooney tsv

I'm so sorry you were disappointed, but proud of you for recognizing you wouldn't be happy ergo sending that sucker back!

I'm always wary of a Dooney TSV.  It's a TSV for a reason: something has been cheapened to bring the price down!
