Maybe we should encourage our respresentatives to make mandatory a five year warranty on major appliances. This is not fair for consumers to be stuck with these things that should last longer than they do.
Maybe then we would get some fridges, stoves, ovens, etc. that were built to last a little longer!

It wouldn't do any good. Around here, good luck finding someone to service your appliances. You're either too far away, or the company is behind in orders. Or you have to wait for the parts, which is probably on a ship coming from China.

I'm waiting for my ten year old kitchen appliances to stop working.
The new appliances are unbelievably expensive.
While my twenty year old manual defrost freezer has never given me any problems.

@Sooner Absolutely! We pay an exorbitant amount for shoddy appliances, especially refrigerators, that often last only a couple of yesrs. The great Chinese rip-off.
My niece bought a very fancy, expensive refrigerator that ran for about 2 weeks, quit, then she waited for 3 months for parts for it to be fixed. What's a person supposed to do for 3 months....use an ice chest? Fortunately, they had one in the basement so every time she wanted something, she had to leave her toddler and run downstairs.

We built our house and moved in 1980 and we are still living in it. Our first appliances, A/C and heating unit, windows and roof lasted for over 30 years and we never had any repairs done to them. Those days are long gone...

this is why i buy appliance, hvac, plumbing, electrical insurance with home policies.

@Sooner I wish appliances were made to last longer, but I have no desire for my income to be the same as mine was when we bought our first new major appliances. It's probably a pipe dream to expect one without the other.

@millieshops The sad thing is that appliances were well made when made in the U.S. and more people had a decent job and made enough money making them for a good living.
Now we are in this mess because we don't have enough decent jobs where reliable things are made. Breaks my heart.

Agree @Sooner . And why do we have to pay hundreds of dollars extra to get the extended 3-year warranty. The appliances should darn well last 3 years and longer WITHOUT having to pay extra.

@Sooner I say that all the time. We need much stronger consumer protection.
