I believe retailers are placing the information this way because consumers resent paying high s/h costs and lose interest in the sale before checkout is complete.

I once heard that the longer a company can keep you on their site, the more likely it will be that you will buy,

Oh, I wouldn't buy if the total cost isn't shown before I buy.  I have backed out of buying once I realized how much an item was going to actually cost several times.
