Question re Warning for V37276, Duraflame electric lantern

[ Edited ]

I'm unsure where to put this question so I'm throwing it in here hoping either CS, the mods or some people with this item see it. I have a feeling if I called customer service they won't know the answer.

I own several of the little duraflame fireplaces and have only had a problem with one of them.  I recently purchased this lantern for a small home office after watching the video where the rep insists that it stays cool to the touch, you could have animals etc. and the questions below the item say the same thing in the answers.

I opened it and the paper that comes with it has in writing "this appliance is hot when in use. To avoid burns do not let skin touch surfaces. Keep combustible materials such as furniture pillows bedding paper clothes and curtains at least 3 feet from the front and keep away from the sides and rear."

this doesn't sound at all to me what I've read or seen on the video. It sounds borderline dangerous. My small office has papers in it and a loveseat. It's not large enough for me to place it 3 feet away from everything, so now I'm wondering if I should just return it because I don't want to take any risk.

I'm also wondering why would a host and vendor go on about how you can put this in a child's room, it's cool to the touch etc., but then the papers that come with it say completely the opposite?

Re: Question re V37276, Duraflame electric lantern

I'm obviously thinking the same but I find it strange that a lot of purchasers would say it was cool. I haven't taken it out of the box yet in case I have to return it. I've been doing some separate research online and it does say that infrared heaters are cool to the touch and more efficient than electric heaters.

I just find it strange that Duraflame would include paperwork specifically for this item saying the opposite of what we were told by Q.

@Cathyshopper   could be their lawyers telling them to CYA.

Agreed im not sure what to think ! I don't plan on covering it in a blanket or papers, but I was going to place it next to my desk. I certainly don't want it to catch a throw on fire that I have on the love seat tho.
I'm pretty sure this was a TSV a year or two ago and I'm assuming we would have threads if there were lots of problems with it, although I'm not good at searching those.

Re: Question re V37276, Duraflame electric lantern

Take it out of the box, plug it in, turn it on & find out if it gets hot....if it gets hot return it.

Yes I realize I could do that and may, but again I was hoping to get some feedback from owners first rather than trying to repack. I found a couple of threads on here from when it was a  similar TSV and so far I'm not reading any problems.
I still find the enclosure concerning tho.

Re: Question re V37276, Duraflame electric lantern

@Cathyshopper   if you are uneasy, I think your choices are limited to return or test it yourself.

I am curious though -  was the precaution part of a whole list of do's and don't's.   I do not have a Duraflame, but I just checked the precautions listed for my air fryer as well as for my toaster oven.  Many cautions for each about where it's safe to use each one.   2 different companies, but both have virtually the same precautions.  How different is the precautionary advice on your lantern?

Re: Question re V37276, Duraflame electric lantern

none of my (many) Duraflames do not get hot to the touch, inc the lantern with single candle, except right where the heat coils are. I had mine up against the wall, nothing in front where the heat came out and had no problems.

if you are uneasy, plug it in and try it. I would keep obvious flammables at least the recommended 3 feet away. that said, in my bedroom, the heater is closer than 3 feet to my bed; the carpet nor the bedding gets warm much less hot.

I never run the heaters when I am not home.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Like I said it would be next to my desk on the floor, so there are obviously papers on my desk. I do have a loveseat in there with obviously cushions on it and also a throw that would probably be a couple feet away from it.
