Moderators - question about reviews?

I have noticed lately that many of the reviews I've read are from people who have not purchased the item.  They just talk about how they dislike the item.  The latest is the TSV from Monday, Logo top has 4 1 star reviews and no one purchased the item, they are just saying they dislike it.  I was under the impression in order to review an item, you had to purchase it.  Is that not the case?  Thank you.

I agree.  They also post negative reviews about how long it took to receive the item.

I also think that posting reviews from vendors' websites is not ethical.   If we wanted to see these we could go there ourselves and look for them.

Not lately @sunsetbeach   it has always been this way!!!!

Anyone can leave a review....you don't have to have ordered it or received it....

It goes both ways....DV calendar had a million 5 star reviews and it was Advanced Order!

Same w/ his cook books.....fab reviews before it even went to print.

It has been discussed and suggested for a very long time that such reviews not be allowed....but it has never changed.

Agree with you....wish it would!!!

I don't think it is unethical....afterall, it is a review about a particular item.

However, they have no value for me....and I ignore them.  I guess I just think QVC people will be more truthful and brutally honest!   LOL

I also don't appreciate when they reprint reviews that were part of a promotion.

At least they have a disclaimer, but I immediately dismiss those reviews as well.  Again, not unethical IMHO though.

Re: Moderators - question about reviews?

@RespectLife While I don't consider the "I didn't purchase or it took too long to get here" reviews unethical, I agree that you should have to purchase the item to review it.  I don't consider it "fair" or "purposeful" information to give low stars for an item that affects their rating. Those kind of things need to go to customer service or to the vendor.  I don't like wasting my time going through reviews to see if they are really about the "item",

Personally, I really dont care why you didn't order an item. Just being honest here,

If my dog doesn't like you, neither do I.

Re: Moderators - question about reviews?

@sunsetbeach.  Moderators don't have anything to do with reviews.

IMO,  if a person has not seen and/or used a product, he is not entitled to review it.  A review should be an evaluation of the appearance and performance of an item.

Re: Moderators - question about reviews?

Agreed!!!! It may have always been the case that some people did this, but it has DEFINITELY gotten way worse. Seems there are a lot of TROLLS on the Q who live to bash every item - and unfortunately for now the Q alllows it under the title of "Review" - which it is not. Other sites won't allow any reviews unless you have purchased. Good idea, Q.Otherwise, the term "Review" loses all meaning.

Re: Moderators - question about reviews?

I do think it's wrong to review an item that hasn't been received.  I always read the reviews and dismiss those that are irrelevant.  I've also seen reviews that were "one star" but the actual review was a rave.  As with everything, nothing is simple and buyer beware!
