The countdown clock was used initially, because you could only buy the item while on screen. That was early QVC.

Ah, that makes sense. You are correct.  And this was before online shopping.

Yes, @PhilaLady1  it was way before online shopping. QVC is now competing with other retail giants. These competitors have better deals and better shipping incentives.

What QVC has is a platform none of them have. Live TV. Now they have to find a way to reinvent the wheel and update the antiquated model that served them 35 years ago.

Bringing back that clock will never happen.

I just saw HSN using a clock and amount of units sold this morning while presenting detergent sheets.

I think the clock is there for the presenter to see how much time is left in the presentation before moving to the next item. The clock is there for them mostly, not for us anymore like it used to be.

Re: Can you add a clock when showing an item?

I still frequently see countdown timers during presentations on QVC and QVC2, but I'd say there's often at least a 50% chance a presentation lingers for another minute or so after the timer hits zero; I would guess that's due to setting up for the next presentation or adding some buffer time to clear phone lines if a lot of orders are being placed.

Usually, I think the timers are pointless, but I appreciate them when they pop up during long presentations such as the TSV or a Big Deal—it's good to know when that half hour or so has only a few minutes left and they'll finally be moving on...

Re: Can you add a clock when showing an item?

I like the countdown clock on HSN. If they're presenting something I'm not interested in I like to know how long until a new item is presented. Do I stick around, or have time to do something else until a new item is shown? Or do I just change the channel?

@Carolina925

Actually, it's the other way around. I've been to the studio a few times, not recently. When an item is selling they keep it on if there are enough in supply. If the item is not selling they want to move on to something that WILL sell and bring in money.

The stories come about when an item IS selling and the hosts need to fill in time. Yes, I know I know, they should describe the item better with less stories. Regardless, the longer the item is on the better the item is selling. There are exceptions, live TSV's.

No.  They want you glued to the TV waiting for the next item.  Who knows,  you might change your mind and buy said item.  Besides, if you know how long before the next item, you might change the channel, get interested in something else, and not come back.

they used to have a clock, just to talk about a product, then their time runs out, time to show another product

@JeanLouiseFinch  sorry my post was not clear, I watch HSN too, and they have a count down clock, just used to having it there. But no biggie really, as I am not buying much anymore.

These hosts talk fast enough already. Can you imagine if they had a stop watch counting them down? I think all the customers would lose it, LOL!
