Beth-QVC, I have found a partial solution to this problem.  I am using a rubber-safe grease to coat the rubber O-rings, that seems to be keeping the battery compartment dry.  My songbirds and even the honeybees and squirrels are really enjoying the birdbath this summer, now that the fountain is keeping the water moving and aerated.  I hope the manufacturer can improve the model next year, so that more customers can enjoy such a convenient little fountain.
