Re: would you object if ancestry.com & 23andme gave your DNA to LE to help solve crimes?

It is a violation of privacy.  A court order is needed to obtain someone's DNA which why Law Enforcement sifts around trash and obtains DNA via discarded items.

Nope!  I don't go around committing crimes so have at it.  I'm clean.

As long as I am informed ahead of time before submission, I would agree to it.  Not an issue for me at all.

I would give my permission. I have zilch to hide.

I did Ancestry.com and plugged in the results to Prometheus Labs. Everything was accurate and it was good information for my children.

Great point. The Supreme Court, in a 4th Amendment case re search warrant and right to privacy, held even in throwing away papers in the garbage there can be no expectation of privacy, since animals open garbage bags, street people go through it, sanitation workers can see it, etc.

Certainly on Internet we all know nothing is secret.

I don't think there's any need for Ancestry et al to cooperate.

If LE has a DNA sample they can submit for testing and then wait for matches in the normal course of testing ... no different than any of us submitting a sample and waiting for matches.

Things like this are exactly why I haven't done  one of these DNA things.

Not that I have committed any crimes, but our right to privacy is eroding more all the time, and I don't like it.

I suspect that before all is said and done, many people will regret using these services, as it perhaps becomes law or common practice for the results to be released to law enforcement and to other entities over time. Maybe health insurance companies, employers etc. will, in time, have access to the information found in DNA testing like this. It doesn't seem too far fetched to me, to believe that we could be heading that way.

When I got my DNA kit I had to go to Ancestry's website to activate it. One of the questions was if I wanted my results shared or kept private. If you say private - only you get the results. If you say shared they are public. So it is all in your own hands what happens to your results. Also they asked if they could use the DNA for other purposes like research. Your choice.

Things are hacked. Rules and laws get changed.

People who really believe that for all time, this will be kept private, will most likely in some future time (could be soon, could be long time out) might very well be proved wrong.

If hackers and identity thieves can get information from other places, they will figure out how to get it from here.

If you don't want to have to worry about who may have your DNA or any other private information, simply don't commit acts that you have to worry about getting caught for. See - simple.

How about on down the line, when reulations and laws might get changed, and that information is now available to insurance companies, employers etc. who will use that information to determine your eligibility for insurance, the cost you will pay, the job you may or not get? What about when hackers learn how to access this information, and it is then used in ways you never authorized?

Whether it becomes legal for them to do this, or they find a back door way to get that information and use it, it will have absolutely nothing to do with doing anything wrong.

Yes, there should be objection.

Fingerprints/blood samples are obtained in a controlled environment.

TV DNA tests (spit-in-a-bottle) could easily be altered in someone’s

bathroom or enroute via delivery.

Could never understand why someone would want to do these tests.

So inaccurate & it’s not a matter of IF someone’s misusing your info,

it’s a matter of WHEN.

@sidsmom

I don't think a lot of people get this, or don't want to.

Just like everyone thought FB was so wonderful and private if you maintained your settings, now many are totally amazed at what has been going on (not that it has really been any secret) and all that has been revealed about them.

This over time, will be no different. It will be happening, probably already is.

Finger prints, foot prints at birth, lab results from any lab, all kinds of info through hospitals and doctor's offices, banks and department stores.supermarkets, Facebook, census records, your pet's vet office, utilities, schools, credit bureaus, local tax offices, companies that do background checks for guns and credit, companies that look up phone numbers for you even show your address, your birthday and age, who lives with you, where you lived before and directions to your house. You can look up a picture of your house and anyone else's house and the best way to get there. You can EXPECT privacy but don't think for a minute that you have it. People use computers and the Internet  When the time comes and you see a drone taking pictures outside of your window, start worrying.
