Re: would you go to a speech where the speaker was grossly over paid?

Do people know what that person is getting for a speaking fee beforehand?

If I liked the person, it wouldn't matter how much they were getting paid.  I don't see how it really matters.

I would go to the speaker because of the topic, not because of what the person got paid. How many people go to entertainment events? millions go to for entertainment value, look at how much a pro-athlete makes and people are willing to pay thousands to see them.  If I had the money, which I do not, I would be at all 4 grand slams!!!

I also think actors are so overpaid it's more than ridiculous.

Many speakers donate the money right back to the school or to their own non-profit causes.

Plus the school makes money from ticket fees and/or special events before of after the speech. I'm sure that the school went down a list of available speakers and chose the best one to get a return on their investment.

In the case of 65k for a 10 minute talk, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it? I can't imagine what she'd have to say that's worth $5k, let alone $65k.

It's like anything else - you are worth what someone is willing to pay.

That's free enterprise at it's finest.

The Candies Foundation paid a teenage mom hundreds of thousands of dollars to make a few speeches.

They felt they got their money's worth too!!!

The same could be said about many speakers, for instance Ted Nugent. I wouldn't waste my time at a free speaking engagement that he spoke at! Can he even count to two?

I went to hear President Clinton speak and I know he gets a ton of $$$ foe a few min. However,  he was there before and after his speech shaking hands and talking to almost everyone present. He talked about his foundation and what they do with the $$ they get.It was interesting and impressive.
