The thread about gift/no gift when the invite states no gift, got me thinking.
what about when a limit is put on the gift (especially) when the limit is rather low, say $10.
We all know that $10 is not that much to work with for a gift. we generally do like coffee cards and stuff, but that's the fun of it. what can you do with $10.
My friend always insists that she has to spend $20. IMO that is very rude, because everyone else who played by the rules, looks like their gift was less.
I really don't get the reasoning behind this, but my friend I think gets a charge out of being the one with a "better" gift.

Chances are she is also the type of person who complains when the gift she gets is not worth/valued at the gift she gave.

i try to keep it at the price agreed upon BUT i also try to look for something that is a great bargain.....say something that may have been priced at $30 that may now be marked down to around $10.

I always play by the rules, but if I happen to find a nice gift on clearance or on sale I will buy it. These are just usually grab gifts or for a secret Santa. I don't think people take it too seriously. Sometimes they are just gag gifts. That's the fun of it.

Sometimes the $10 gift is nicer than the $20 gift. People who go above the limit often are not getting something nice; they are just going by the $ amount and not the quality of the gift.
Never could stand secret Santa, btw.

I play by the rules, too. I can always easily find something for the set price, unless it's for a man... then I'm usually stuck
There have been a couple of times I baked. I knew the husband of a friend loved brownies I made for a party once. Every time he caught my eye, he was scooping up one or two and chewing on another, so when his BD came around, I made him a 9x13 inch pan of them and told him they were all for him, LOL.

This is the key to giving nice gifts at the lower price points. You have to shop ahead, and pick up things that have been drastically reduced. Often you can give a very nice gift and really not lie when you said you only spent the limit! You can also buy in sets (like a set of flameless candles or a set of Temp-tations or a set of philosophy) and if you break the set up, you are still within the limit.

Last year my daughter and I were shopping in her local mall, the Yankee Candle store was leaving and they had a sale. The prices were unbelievable, even though it was in the middle of summer she bought beautiful and fragrant Christmas candles and some came with gorgeous glass containers. the small ones cost about $1.75 and the large ones $2.50. She gave them out to her office at holiday time and of course no one knew how much they cost. I believe the original prices for the larger ones was over $30.

Give a jar of pennies. ($10)
When it $10, that's what it means. A Starbucks's gift card.

The limit is usually much too low, I do spend more because I do not like giving gift cards. I just don't go over by a lot, if it's $15, I'll go up to $30.
