I'm not sure why people automatically assumed the cashier did it on purpose or got fired.

Mistakes DO happen. That's why you check at the end of the shift when you balance.

When I was in college, I was a teller at a bank...the lead or vault teller, actually.

I handled thousands in cash every day. Every afternoon the op mgr and I balanced the vault.

Tellers could be out of balance, but NEVER the vault. Our vault was $2000 short, and I had no.idea what happened.

Two weeks went by. I thought for sure I would be fired. Then when we were balancing the vault one day, my op mgr happened to shift a stack of cash, and guess what? A pack of 20s (2000) had fallen behind the other stacks and was not noticeable.

Things happen. You don't just fire people.

A lot of places DO....

Not for honest mistakes, surely?

We're all.just human.. mistakes are bound to happen.

To be clear, I'm not talking about things like open.heart surgery.

I'm talking about every day things like this.

if you work for some place that's a corporation, believe me, they can't just fire you. even if they suspect you of stealing, they have to have proof, and documentation.

you would never get fired for just being "short" or suspect of something. Leaves them open to lawsuits if it turns out to be a honest mistake.

If you are hired by an at will employer, they can fire you at any time, and don't have to have good reason. I worked and retired from a major bank and it was in the employee handbook. We were all aware of it.

The poster who was a vault teller, there was not reason to be short $2000.00 if the cash was stacked and banded properly. And counted properly.

Maybe the cashier was fired, maybe not. The sad thing, the evil of this story is that op WANTED the cashier to get fired for something that was probably a mistake, an oversight. No one, no one would put their job in jeopardy by stealing $20 in postage stamps. OP went out of her way to accuse the cashier of stealing.....stamps. My guess is, they found them on the floor or at the register. Or perhaps that's my hope. And she's so proud of herself. Even if I THOUGHT the cashier took the stamps, I would have just said that she didn't give me the stamps. I wouldn't have accused her of taking them because there was no reason to think that she did. People do get distracted, they do make mistakes. And OP is so proud of herself....

She did not. Today, while at Whole Foods I was rung up for 3 - 1 gallon jugs of water but only bought two. I always take a look at my receipt in the foyer before leaving and went back to get my money for the overcharge.....a whole $1.20.

I know when I was working, I always knew when I made a mistake. ALWAYS. I also think there are some people who are just too lazy to correct their mistakes or maybe think the customer won't notice.

You are more fortunate than most humans. In a class by yourself. We don't don't know when we've made a mistake until someone tells.

This has happened to me many times. I get my stamps from the food store. Sometimes the cashier forgets to give me the stamps or my change. No big deal I call the food store tell them what happened and when I go back get the stamps etc. I never accuse the cashier of being dishonest. A mistake no big deal

The other side --- the cashier balanced perfectly, and Walmart decided to give the OP stamps anyway, 'because the customer is always right.' Wink

I buy my stamps at the post office.
