@shoekitty, I too often over-tip. I was taken out to nice restaurants from childhood and have always understood that good service above-and-beyond should be rewarded.

 

I have family members in the restaurant and hospitality business who have done everything from being servers to sommeliers to manager/coordinator. When I have a pleasant, cheerful, upbeat server who goes the extra mile, I want to tip well. 

 

When we had the recent week-long power outage due to storms, there was ONE restaurant that had power (generator) in a town of 147,000. They had only 4 servers (huge Dennys). My bill was $20 and I gave the girl a $10 tip because they were all working their butts off, double shifts, etc and I knew some wouldn't or couldn't tip.

No way, no how.  If I choose to leave a tip in a jar I can.  I don't care what kind of system they have, it's inappropriate.  When I wait on myself and all they have to do is take my money they don't deserve a tip.
