This happened with my 90 year old father this year.
He couldn't pass the driving test, which was better. But he was still thinking of sneaking it. It is really sad, and could be any of us someday.
A few other things came together, and he is in assisted living now.
How do you say to a man that fought for his country that he can't drive?

#1---- Pull and take home the Coil Wire. The vehicle will not start.
If telling him directly not to drive does not work, have someone take all of his ignition keys. If you can't do that, read my suggestion #1.

We had this issue with my mother. She mentioned something about car insurance one day when I was there and I called them. Long story but I was able to tell her that they couldn't renew it due to minor accidents and that was that. We took the car and sold it fearing that she might still drive or forget that she had no insurance and drive. When it is someone else, Dr., insurance agent etc telling them, I think most will not fight it.

@hyacinth003, it is very sad if you must do that.
A friend of my mom was in his 80's and was no longer a responsible driver. His children tried several times before they finally got him to stop driving. But he still managed to keep his beloved pick-up parked in front of his house.
What was so very sad was he missed driving so much that he would take his lunch out to his pick-up and eat there.
I guess he just never got over it.

This is a very difficult situation. My aunt had to be told no more driving by her doctor. She would get in a car and forget where she was going or how to get home. More than once the police had to call a relative because my aunt was totally lost and they didn't want her driving home.
My best friend is going through this with her aunt as well. Her car just got totaled in an accident. Luckily no one was hurt and her car was totaled because it was older and not in great shape anyhow. But that might be a blessing in disguise for her to quit driving.
I don't envy anyone in this situation.

It's hard when they are not safe on the road but to them they think they are just as good as they were 50 yrs ago. When my dad was aroud 80 he told me after he left my house one day that people sure were friendly. He said they were waving at me and honking there horns to get my attention just to wave. Come to find out he was going the wrong way on a 4 lane road. I had an officer I know call DMV and request he turn his tags in. Oh I never told him what I had done. ![]()
