swore I would never take in a stray cat...

I have 3 black cats, 2 of them under 2, the 3rd is 9. I did have a 4th until last June (poor old Mr Psycho). I am not looking for any more.

Friday night when I came home there was a kitty in my driveway I have never seen before, it ran to me when I opened the door, meowing. Followed me up my stairs and ran right in my house when I opened the door. I had to grab him and take him back out or face certain mayhem.

Kitty is very soft, very clean, very well behaved and sweet, and is definitely not used to being outdoors. Luckily it was in the 40s here (not freezing as it has been) so I took him a blanket and some food and put it out on my porch, then I had to go out for a couple of hours.

When I came home he was of course waiting for me.

It had gotten dark and was getting colder, but I thought geez I don't have a room to isolate this kitty in. But kitty sat out there with his paws on my front door, shaking.

I'd called neighbors to put the word out, posted photos on my facebook, called the dog warden (but found out they will only deal with dogs), but nobody had any idea who belongs to kitty.

I realized I did have one room I could isolate him in - my bedroom - oh boy would that make my 3 mad. I could not leave him outside. He was cold, and there are cats that roam here who are not very nice, I did not want him to meet up with any of them.

Kitty was set up with food, water, and a clean litter box, and within a minute, jumped on the bed and curled up to go to sleep like he belonged there. He slept right next to me, closer than any of mine ever do. Last night he slept ON me lol. He's eating but not like he's been hungry for long, just normal, and he decided to use the existing litter box rather than the fresh new one.

I posted on craigslist, I called the local shelter (they have no reports of a lost kitty), I don't know what to do next. I'm already attached to him (and he definitely seems in love with me) so I don't want to turn him in to the shelter, but I can't keep him isolated in my bedroom for long either.

I did let one of my kitties see him for a moment this morning. Typical reaction followed.

Mine are up to date on vaccines, and stray kitty seems more likely than not to be healthy, has no fleas or earmites or wounds. Someone took care of him well because he will come and stay on command.

Ultimately I would like to find his people, but if he's going to stay here more than another day, I think he's going to have to meet the residents.

If I can't find his people I am really afraid I will want to keep him. I can afford it and I have plenty of space, but who knows what the other kitties would ultimately think of this. It doesn't always work out after the initial power play....
