Re: stores ...soon goodbye to many I think

@Kachina624

yes not only is it sad but most, including me, did I think the whole process thru how these goods get to stores!

As Americans we are just used to have full shelves and it's a whole new world out here!!!

Re: stores ...soon goodbye to many I think

There are people who don't like shopping online. My friend is like that and she'll be heartbroken if stores close permanently. I shouldn't buy shoes online because they need to be tried in first so I hope shoe stores survive.

While in some parts malls are like ghost towns, thats not the case here....just drive by a mall and you will see the parking lots packed and parking garages with cars on the top floor.... It will be interesting to see how they will look as stores open up (some of them chose to wait)....while others did offer curbside from just a few of the mall stores....

The way I heard that people are lining up at malls and businesses here.....like a cattle stampede....I bet a very popular and always packed shopping center will be back to business as usual....that is providing they DO have stuff to sell that will be the key!!!......Of course, if the stores are boring there's also a lot of restaurants and bars as well....and also a movie theater and a combo restaurant/bowling alley too....lots of people go their for not only shopping but entertainment.....

I would be very unhappy if b&m stores, especially Macy's, disappear completely.  I like walking the stores, feeling the merchandise, trying items on.  It is therapy for me.  My saying is "When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping" LOL!!  Online shopping may be "convenient" but I would miss the in person shopping experience.

Re: stores ...soon goodbye to many I think

One thing people are overlooking with their predictions of no B&M stores...DELIVERY.   We've all seen and heared the horror stories of how UPS, FEDEX, USPS, and even Amazon struggled to get packages delivered during the Christmas shopping season.....Too try to get a handle on things Amazon is starting their own fleet and they are struggling to keep up with prime deliveries as their clientel grows (and that was BEFORE the pandemic )....this was also eating into Amazon's profits as well.....and if this is happening with "mighty" Amazon how will other retailers fair and cope ??????

So if retailers started to struggle with deliveries what will they do if more and more customers rely on online shopping.....you will see shipping and delivery rates go up DRAMATICALLY to assure you get your order delivered FAST as you've come to expect....I hope retailers figure it out and still offer the option of B&M stores as well as online.....

Re: stores ...soon goodbye to many I think

Washington Post had an article in their business section titled "From shaky ground to the precipice".

It showed change in foot traffic from March 1 thru Aril 18, 2020.  Of course stores were shut down because of covid19.  But it was still scary to see this information.  And to wonder if they can come out it, not 100%, but just enough to survive.

For example (just a sampling):

Belk Department store is down 87%

J. Crew down 97%

JC Penney - minus 93%

Loft - minus 89%

Neiman Marcus - minus 97%

Talbots - minus 74%

J. Jill - down 51% (my favorite clothing storeWoman Sad)

These past few weeks, I've been getting e-mails several times per week from JJill offering 30% on new merchandise (which rarely happened before this), then 40%, today 50% all merchandise, including sale.  One day it was 70%!  That day I purchased 5 tops at a cost of $52 and free shipping.  Crazy.

@roeroe1005, seeing these numbers in print makes me wonder just how long they can go on. I'm afraid no one knows how long the repercusions of this virus will be echoing. I hope I am wrong. But, how can a business survive?

I like JJill and have ordered things from them and I wish I had got that email Smiley Happy

For health reasons I will not be shopping in person for the foreseeable future, I can buy online or not buy at all

Almost every store & mall is open yet NO inventory.

Today, I had my Kohl's ca$h from before the shutdown. Kohl's also had good coupons today.  After I waited 35 minutes for my turn to go in...I went to the "summer" section -- I was going to purchase a chaise for my lanai.  I saw they were available in store from "online" -- NONE.  Nothing for summer, wreaths, decor, etc.

I headed to linen area and thought OK I'll check that out.  Shelves bare😳, headed over to bath section -- again slim pickings!

I asked the clerk where the summer things were.  She stated no additional inventory will be shipped to stores from warehouse right now or at least until the warehouse distribution centers re-open.  I asked could I extend my $30 kohl's cash...nope😡😡. (they are only giving 30 days extension from reopening).

The manager stated only stores doing well are WM and Target as they have their own warehouses.

I saw a young mother in line with cart full of kids stuff -- gave to her🙂.

Then I had a return for HomeGoods.  No one there so went right in but shelves were almost empty.  No selections like before.

JCP & Macy's oh what a wreck😳 for sure sinking ship!  The store was a mess racks of stuff marked clearance everywhere! Barely anything  in bed & home section, clothing racks everywhere -- well lots of Christmas & Spring decor 80-90% off.

I won't be returning to stores and online has been hit or miss!  I place order with JCP, Macys and Kohl's within hours they send me  email stating "items not available your account not charged".

This is what to expect once you venture to stores.  I completely understand with nothing coming to ports from China.

The local mall in my area has opened but I don't know what stores are open and which have remained closed.  I have not gone.  I've been to Target and Home Depot a few times and they are both generally busy.  On Friday we ventured to Ashley Furniture to get a lounge chair for my husband for father's day.  They place was jumping.  They were having a 30% off sale.  While there, I walked into the mattress area and the sale was going on there too.  Ended up returning today and buying a mattress and adjustable base.  My husband has wanted one for a looooong time and our mattress is 19 years old.  And again, it was jumping...lots and lots of people.

@ScrapHappy

We "attempted" to go there today and walked in the door & out!

We need a new kitchen table and he wants new bed.

There is only 1 Ashley furniture about a hour from here, therefore, it's usually busy but with just re-opening, good sale, holiday it was crazy.

What style mattress did you purchase if you don't mind me asking?  We haven't bought one in 10 years although I'd like the Sleep Number style but pretty expensive.

Thank you we will try going again tomorrow or Thursday.
