stolen debit numbers

My co worker just sent me a text saying that someone got ahold of her debit card numbers and charged cigars from Spain at 300.00. Says she was at gas station and her card got denied and at the bottom of the receipt it said to call her bank. They put a hold on her account and she can't use it for 2 weeks.

I would assume this is from using debit cards for purchases online? Ever happen to any of you?
