Are you looking in the SC area only? Check out Roan Mountain TN. Have had a log home in the tri-cities for many years as a second home. Many activities and a lovely area.

I am originally from CA and moved to NC about 17 yrs ago.
What are you looking for in the city or area you are moving to.
That may help us give you some advice.

Congrats! There are so many beautiful places to live outside of California. I moved from San Diego to Indiana and absolutely wish I had done it years earlier. I hope you find your perfect place to live. I almost chose Asheville NC.

i chose this area to be close to family. i wanted to be fairly close to a major airport for future travel (Charlotte) - but have had enough of bigggggg city living. i do enjoy ballet/symphony but don't need it every week . i may want to do some part time work in the non profit area since i am a pretty driven person and worry about going from 100 mph to 0 . so i want to return to Southern culture - but want to be in a semi-metropolitan area with the advantages that brings - but that isn't like LA or Atlanta. thanks in advance for all input. i'm heading off to work so may not be able to check back until later!

I live in that area. My 2 sisters have migrated here too. We all love it. I'm closer to Greenville, but one of my sisters is just outside Spartanburg. Is there anything specific you want to know? If you are looking for an active social life and enjoy the outdoors, I'd recommend moving closer to Greenville. Happy to answer any questions you have. Come on down...we'd love to have you!

I live in Spartanburg. I think it is a great area! Greenville is a good bit larger and if I were moving here from a bigger city I think I would choose Greenville, but it only takes me 45 minutes to get there so Spartanburg works for me.
I feel the best thing about this area is that I have all the benefits of living in a small town on a daily basis but bigger city excitement is super close. Atlanta is about 2 1/2 hours away and Charlotte is only 1 1/2 hours away. Charlotte is where I usually go to see concerts although Greenville gets a fair share of big names through as well. Shopping in Greenville is actually pretty good.
I can be in the mountains in about an hour. I can be to Charleston in 3 1/2 and to Myrtle Beach in about 4 hours. Coast to mountains in a few hours drive is nice for planning long weekend getaways. You don't need a whole week to enjoy a change of scenery.
Charlotte has NFL with the Panthers, Atlanta has MLB with the Braves, and Greenville has minor league hockey. There is also the Charlotte Motor Speedway for Nascar. So, if you like sports we've got you covered.
We get all four seasons here. Winter usually gives one or two very small snowfalls. Just enough to enjoy watching it fall then it quickly goes away. The festival of flowers at Biltmore House in Asheville is spectacular and again a super short drive away. Summers are beautiful and very green. We do have high allergy counts though if that is a concern for you.
There are quite a few colleges in the area which provides ample plays, lectures, concerts, sporting events, etc. to attend for very low costs. It also provides easy access to continuing education if you are interested in classes for business or personal enrichment.
Cost of living is low compared to most of the country. Spartanburg's median home price is $119,000 currently. Gas as of 2 days ago was $1.83/gallon regular.
I like where I live. Can you tell?
I'd be happy to try to answer any questions you might have. Good luck on your move where ever you end up!

I probably can't add a lot to this post, BUT I lived in Spartanburg for a couple of years as a teenager, and remember just loving it. The weather and the people were just lovely.

Come on down! I'm originally from Detroit, but have been in Spartanburg County for 30+ years. I have seen the area grow tremendously - not only in population, but culture.
The area (Spartanburg/Greenville counties) has plenty to offer as far as culture, nightlife, job growth, whatever you may be looking for. As with any expanding metropolitan area, it also has its downside. Be sure to throughly checkout where you would like to live; there too you will find a wide range of housing opportunities.
Even though we are still considered "small" towns, we do have our share of traffic problems. Woodruff Road in Greenville during the rush hour and weekends, I-85 southbound during rush hours, and even the Westside of Spartanburg on the weekends gets crazy.
The Greenville Drive is the farm team for the Boston Red Sox. A beautiful stadium.
The winters may be mild, but the summers are hot and long. But then, you're not far from either the mountains or the beach; a few hours drive.
The area offers so much. It's up to you to discover it. I've visited many places in these 50 United States, and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
