If you're in a third world country and have the refund put on a prepaid debit card offered by many online tax preparation companies.....I doubt you'll worry about being caught for fraud.

Most in person tax services now require you to bring in all SS cards. Not just the numbers on a sheet of paper.

Why would someone in a third-world country be filing a U.S. tax return?

Oh no that's terrible! I hope and pray you can get it straightened out easily and fast!

PS) I know you said your sons 17 so maybe he works already but does anyone remember when kids did NOT need a Social Security number UNTIL they worked? I think it should still be like that because I heard that people steal little kids SS numbers a lot and use them to charge up things and ruin kids credit before they even work and or establish credit.

Best of luck to you.

Re: someone stole our son's SSN to use on their taxes!!!

This happened to my GD year before last! After she filed online (last day of course) her claim came back rejected. Said she had already filed. Long story, but she called IRS and agent was helpful and very informative. Yes, it seemed someone had filed using her SS#. She had to send in birth certificate, a copy of license enlarged to 8X11, and file on paper, oh and she applied and was given an immediate extension. . She was given a case number. She dallied around getting all the info to them. I think she waited a couple months. After she mailed all the forms, and info they needed her refund came around October. She filed last year no problem

Re: someone stole our son's SSN to use on their taxes!!!

After you call and speak with IRS you need to put a lock on his credit for safety. Also, this does happen a lot. People use the SS# to work. No one used my GD's SS to get credit, but they were working with it they think. I don't even think they look for these people who do this. Either that or they slip away, get another SS# and move on.

Sometimes it is a mistake in the SS numbers someone else is using as well. That happens more often than you would think.

yes they pointed this out to us,too. but we will not know anything until they start the investigation after they recieve our mailed in return. i really hope that turns out to be the case - more for our son than us. of course we don't want his name/credit ruined before he even gets out of HS and starts trying to build some kind of life for himself!

i told DH last night i am not going to worry and stress about it. let God and the IRS handle this mess! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1} we will of course do what they tell us but it will work out in the end because we are the only ones that can prove without a doubt that he is and has been our son for the last 17 years!

Re: someone stole our son's SSN to use on their taxes!!!

Years ago when I was working, I went to the bank for a loan. When they pulled up my credit history, they questioned why I would take out a payday loan which had been taken out in the previous couple of weeks (!!!!!) NEVER have I even slightly considered doing that. I got the location information, went there, talked to the manager, showed him my ss card and he said he couldn't share any information about the person who was falsely using my ss number.

I made an appointment with ss administration. All they could do was note it in my file. I filled out a identity fraud report with Experian. I have not had any fraudulent charges against my ss # since. I get a free credit report annually and monitor it closely.

I hope your son gets this issue resolved. It creates such a mess. Lots of time and energy devoted to solving the mystery.

I signed up for fraud alert with my bank. It works quite well. Anytime a charge that is out of character for my spending profile is made, I get a call. Charges were restored and the perp was caught. Unfortunately, this after the incident mentioned above.

The same thing happened to my brother last year and he was deceased ! My SIL was horrified. Apparently his refund went directly into this creep's bank account. My SIL was able to fix the problem and receive the refund, but it took months and the thief wasn't caught.

That would make it easier for honest people, but the dishonest were claiming kids who were non-existent which I believe is where the whole requirement started for little ones to have their own numbers. Anyone really know?
