Have you ever softened a 5 lb. bag of rock hard sugar and how did you do it? I don't want to climb up on the roof and drop it. lol TIA

I've never had hard white sugar. Brown sugar usually goes hard.

Same here, never had white sugar get hard. If brown sugar goes hard my mom always put a couple apple slices in the bag for a day or two then removed them, it always softened up the sugar.

I think if the sugar was that rock hard...I'd just throw it out and start again!

I keep all my baking supplies in Lock N Locks now and don't have any problems.

If white is hard, moisture may have gotten into the package. If you cannot chip it (until it falls apart) try a blender or food processor.

I don't know if this works but it's worth a try. It looks like you'll have to cut and paste the website.

I've read heating the sugar in either the oven (lowest temp) or microwave for short periods will work. Other suggestions I read were to try a food processor or blender, if you can break it into chunks (being careful not to turn it into powdered sugar!). I remember my mom would place a piece of bread into a bag of brown sugar that had hardened, but it won't work with white sugar. I once had a bag of white sugar harden, so I placed it into a large plastic bag, sealed it, and threw it on the floor a couple of times. :-) I then broke down the chunks into smaller pieces with a spoon. If it ever happens again, I think I'll just try heating it in the oven for a bit!

Thanks everyone. I'll try one method and if it doesn't work I'll go try another one. Thanks so much.

Just the opposite. I live in the desert and sugar gets hard in a couple of months on the shelf. I throw it out and buy another. I soften brown sugar in the microwave.

I just open the bag and put it in a large bowl and get a knife and it will loosen easily - or put a pair of bakers plastic gloves on and crush it with your fingers.
