I decided on the dark brown one for the foyer. Boring but it will coordinate so it's all good I guess.

As so many have stated, they don't have to match, but should coordinate in both color and for me, I would think similar patterns. By that, I mean I wouldn't lay an oriental rug in one place, and a modern geometric pattern in another, although many might do just that.

I think if you are looking to streamline a look, pull it together, then matching would be best.

I also now have a preference for getting the 'busy' out of my house. Too many patterns and too many different colors seems to be so 1980's-90's, and I'm looking for a cleaner look, less pattern, more neutral colors for the big stuff. Not that everyone is doing that or that it is necessary, but something to think of. Take a good look at all the colors and patterns in you rooms, and are you happy with it, or does it need toned down (or punched up some, which a nice rug can do when everything else is already pretty plain).

None of mine match, but they co ordinate. For instance my entry way (mine isn't big enough to be a foyer) haha looks into my living room and dining room. The dining and living room have opposite rugs. They are same size, same pattern. One is Sage, the other ivory/beige.. The entry room carpet is solid sage.

Other than that the area rugs match the room they are in. I have hardwoods, so I need area, and runners for our lifestyle. I do like the look of vast bare, shining hardwoods. But I don't want traffic marks either!. I am in the process of replacing many of them. And it is hard!

We just finished remodeling the master bedroom and bath. I thought about US this time. Not so much what others would think. I went with what I really, really wanted. Practical, or NOT! In the end it is all about what your family wants and needs. You are paying, and when the doors close and you sit down, it is you who looks at it.

Sounds like you have great taste anyway!
