"HIS FAVORITE FLOWERS WERE PRIMROSES", SHE SAID ABOUT DISRAELI

How sweet.  Queen Victoria's statement accompanied her floral tribute of primroses upon British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli's death.

Have been reading about Disraeli's close friendship with Victoria, after their years of public service together.  Many thought them an unlikely pair, yet there was so much respect and affection--

What an extraordinary, talented figure Disraeli was in Victorian Britain.  In his youth he cut a dashing figure-- he was hard-working, brilliant, ambitious, protean in his abilities.

Don't know how he managed it, but he had a flourishing literary career,  at the same time he was a rising statesman, with two separate turns at the Prime Ministership.

His novels were widely read and discussed, among them "Coningsby",  "Sybil", and "Tancred"--  but there were many, many more-- plus nonfiction as well.

He fought back rampant anti-Semitism to rise to the very pinnacle of power and influence.

His residence, "Hughenden":

His motto,  "To the brave, nothing is difficult" is carved in one of the mantels at Hughenden.

Fascinating man.

I still remember the 1978 mini series about this fascinating man starring an unabashedly romantic looking Ian McShane.

As I was reading Oznell's post I thought of that series about Disraeli played by McShane, it was excellent and I would watch it again.  I believe it was on Masterpiece Theater.  It was a well worth history lesson for me.

Oznell, thank you for posting!

Love Ian McShane!   I'm not surprised that there is such fondness for his "Disraeli" among posters-   he had such presence, and was very interesting casting.   Thanks for posting episode, @jackthebear !

@just bee ,  Ian McShane's unruly curls and his 'soulfulness'  seem very Disraeli- esque!
