protection from hairballs and spitups from kitties on our new bedding...?

Hi, there. I just splurged on new bedding (comforters and quilts) for all of our beds. We have 2 young cats and a very old sweet cat...all of them have spitups (hairballs) from time to time...and I'm desperate to protect our new bedding. Still, whatever protection I use, I'd like it to be cozy and soft and pretty to look at (hopefully a solid color to blend)....but thick enough so that any stains don't go through it to the bedding. I know that's a lot to ask for, but can anyone please help with some suggestions?
