please make sure you get permission - written permission - from your landlord if you are getting a pet. You don't know what other renters have in their agreement with your landlord and you cannot assume that because your new pet is so cute or you are elderly or you are so young, that your landlord will let you keep it.
If they hem & haw about pets when you mention it to them, they aren't keen on the idea.
It is not good to ask for forgiveness after the fact - they are landlords, not your family. At best, nothing happens. At worse, your rent goes up, you are asked to get rid of your new pet and/or you are evicted or your lease is not renewed.
In my state, pet stores and shelters will not release any pet to you until they have confirmed with your landlord that it is okay to have a pet in your apartment.
For the sake of the animal, please make sure you get permission!!
