@Gram W wrote:@Cakers3. Thank you for your post. Ann Frank's words should be an inspiration for us all. My family attends parades, participates in memorial rides, etc on any occasion to remember the past path to our freedoms. On the way home from the fireworks the radio station program was discussing the true happenings at the Battle of Gettysburg. They read from actual journals and letters from those who fought. I always enjoy my visits to Gettysburg but this put new meaning to the site. I will be reading more before my trip there this summer.
On the news yesterday they read the list of the 5 least patriotic states in the US. As you can imagine NY was on that list. I was not surprised.
We went to see the fireworks last night. They were very nice. Lots of noise and color. The greatgrand toddlers (1 and 2) loved it. They each wore their big ear protectors without a fuss. The 5 and 7 year olds pledged the flag and sang for us. They did a great job. Everyone wore their red, white and blue. The kids gave everyone a flag " tattoo". We had a great time making memories that hopefully they will remember the rest of their lives. We will do it again next year. Our country's history, good and not so good, they don't learn in school they will get at home.
What qualifies a state as being "least patriotic"? I wonder if my state was on the list.

@Gram W Thank you.
I've seen reports about the most and least "patriotic" states through the years and imo the word "patriotic" is misleading.
Most of the stats are based on:
1. Military enrollment per capita and number of vets per capita
2. VA and other agencies and their quality of care to vets
3. Civil engagement by citizens including voting numbers
There are other factors but these three pop up the most and usually at the top.
It is interesting to see where our military "fits in" in all states. And also not always surprising.
This post may have been a tad off-topic but since July 4th is a celebration of our freedoms...........enough said. The word "patriotic" means several things to many people.
Glad we can still discuss and only be scolded by disgruntled posters. ROTFL

Why would you choose to attack an American state on the 4th of July? It's so inappropriate.

At the risk of being scolded as a disgruntled poster , I agree with you @Noel7.

As Americans we should all be especially thankful for all the men and women before us who fought to give us our freedoms!!! Many made the ultimate sacrifice and we should be never forget them or their families. Regardless of the political climate, we are blessed to live in a democracy. Our freedoms were attained by thru blood, sweat, and tears. I am eternally grateful for those who fought to make life better for all of us. God bless the USA!!!

As a Proud and Patriotic New Yorker, I would like to welcome Geller Girl to my area. I have a feeling she would see more patriotism than where she lives. What a rude thing for her to say. I notice she omitted saying where she lives.

My state of Wisconsin is quite patriotic. We've even opened our borders to Illinois tourists, who (generally speaking), drive like maniacs.

@blackhole99 . Just remember, it works both ways. She is free to say what she wants and so is everyone else. Funny how that works huh. If you want I will tweet it.

I loved that book. I grew up in NYC and later lived on LI - it was fascinating to think that those events took place right there. I didn't know it was a television series. Thanks for mentioning it.
@software
Actually, this is the one I read, but I'm sure they are very much alike.
