note from my local veterinarian

i have 2 kitty cats, Punkin and Lietl.

due to prevailing conditions here in Los Angeles, i have been staying close to home for a couple of weeks.  most everything social / educational / religious has been cancelled or is coming into the house over the internet.

we were abruptly put on lockdown last night except for essential services.  so i was very glad to receive an e-mail this a m that my local vet is still operating. i consider theirs an essential service, indeed.

Good to know and it's nice your vet is communicating!

My vet is older and I have a feeling he will retire soon.  He also has a small farm with several acres where he has his practice.

Our dog is older (just turned 14) and has old age health issues...I worry about getting in touch in case the vet stops his practice....always something to worry about!

@haddon9 i know what you mean. at times like these we realize what people and services contribute by being there when needed. we enjoy that peace of mind and normally,  we don't even think about it.

i am sure your vet would hand off the practice to someone capable when the time comes.

[ Edited ]

We received this email from our vet.  So thankful they are staying open and hope and pray that they all stay safe.

First off let us say that we hope you and your family are healthy and weathering the storm over COIVID-19 well. This crisis will pass, but we need to be responsible, follow the CDC guidelines, and remain calm. We know your pets are members of your family and we want to be able to continue to provide veterinary healthcare services to them, but we will need your help and understanding. In order to limit exposure to our staff, we will immediately be making some changes to our daily operations. I am sure you realize that if there is an outbreak of the virus in the hospital that it will be difficult to continue to provide continuous care for your pets. These are our new procedures:

Please stay home if you are feeling ill or have been in close contact with those that are sick. If your pet needs veterinary care and you are sick, please reach out to a friend, family member, or a pet-sitter to organize transportation to us.

For Appointments:

1.       Call the office from the parking lot to let us know you are here. A staff member will meet you at the front door to bring your pet into the exam room and we will confirm your phone number. We ask that you remain in your car after this while the technician and doctor call you for a history and discuss your pet's appointment.

2.       After the doctor examines your pet, the doctor will call you to discuss the findings, discuss treatment plans & recommendations just as normally would happen in the exam room.

3.       All discharge instructions will be emailed to you.

4.       An invoice will be verbally relayed for electronic payment over the phone. Receipts will be emailed.

5.       After the visit a staff member will bring your pet back to you at the front door.

For those of us who live alone, our furbabies are a G-dsend, especially when we are socially isolated as we are now.

@queendiva   i agree!   i noticed that when firming up what i needed in the larder for the next few weeks, my emphasis was on necessities for the kitty-girlz!   in my next life i should come back as one of my kitties!!!!

I called our vet this morning as I need to pick up Dasuquin for my pup. They are open but doing curbside delivery and payment for things like this. I'm glad they are open.

Re: note from my local veterinarian

@ms traditional- I've always said that I'm coming back as a very pampered cat in my next life!  Woman Very Happy

Even from my earliest memories I've always had a cat or cats around me.  I was known all through school, from elementary on up, as "the cat lady".  Everyone knew, if they had a stray that needed a home, they only had to show it to me.

I can't imagine life without one or more cats.  I currently have three; they always make me smile, no matter what else is happening in my life.

I made sure I stocked up on cat food and litter, once this virus situation looked like it was becaming serious.

Re: note from my local veterinarian

my cats will eat before me, I did stock up on cat food & treats DD has a dog I yelled at her saying get ready we all may not be able to get out get the dog food & treats. stock up, shelves may be bare. Vet up the street is open 7 days a week half day sat & sun have 3 vets that change shifts. If I do get this gov. check (not sure retired people get it) some will go to humane society (I give twice a year) the other part St. Mary food bank. We are fine on our finances but understand they really need it. Hope I get this check to help them out more. Read that some are just giving up their pets to humane society cuz of the virus and not being able to afford food for them. Sad. Humane society is overun as it is and if this virus causing owners not to be able to feed them is horrible.
