It's a sign of respect. Regardless, of how we felt about his politics. He devoted his life to public service, and seemed to be a humble man.

 

I only check my mail twice a week, so I will not even notice.

 

 I also doubt that the postal workers will be off. Perhaps, they will not be delivering mail, but at this time of year I am sure that they can find other areas for them to work in.

I think they did shut down Gov't operations for past Presidents lying in state. Not sure exactly which but I remember Regan I thought they did.

Yes when Regan and Gerald Ford  passed away all government offices were closed.  It is done for all former Presidents who die.
