I can't tell you how many times I've heard that ridiculous argument - if they want to get in, they will get in.

First of all, well, duh!

Secondly, they will choose the easiest target. If it's more difficult to break into my house they will find the house that has unlocked doors, or no alarm, or any one of ways that they make it easier for people to gain access.

Criminals are criminals, if they want in a certain house because it might contain something they want, they know how to get in.

I agree that security alarms companies are useless in rural areas and criminals know that as well.

I have a 12 ft wide wall of sliding glass, it certainly would be no problem at all if a robber wanted in. You do not even have to try very hard to get in there even when they are locked. I enjoy the uninterrupted view and would not change anything. I feel I live in a safe neighborhood.I worry more if I am out at night about alligators or snakes than crooks. My DH does keep a loaded shotgun in his closet, but I would never be able to shoot anyone.

Our home was broken into 7 years ago in broad daylight. The thief walked out the back door with over $4,000 in jewelry in his/her pocket, our jewelry never turned up anywhere, so we still have no idea who did it. Since then, we have installed a state of the art security system, posted our home and property with No Trespassing signs, and we have permits to conceal and carry. However, my husband and I are retired and home all the time now. We don't have any outbuildings, so a thief actually has to break into the house, to steal anything we own. I will not hesitate to shoot anyone detected on the property, trying to break into my house. Outside of my mother and brother who live in front of me, my closest neighbors are 1/4 - 1/2 mile away in either direction.

My DH and I are HOA trustees. When anyone has a break in they are to notify us as well as the police. The times in the 26 years we have lived here that people had robberies was when there was construction going on nearby (sewer, water, roadwork, etc). Apparently thieves think that no one would notice strange vehicles... vans and junk looking cars mostly... parked around these sites during construction. So at these times we are all on alert and write down license numbers and some of us will ask workers if the vehicles are theirs.

Our neighborhood has a great watch system and it has always been really safe. I have a security system, some flood lights that are motion sensor and my two dogs.
