living alone/safety

I just found out that someone I know casually was found dead in his home and was there for quite some time. Mail was piled up but a new mailcarrier was on and didn't report it. Not his fault but my question is if you live alone do you have a support system? Like having your friend or family call at least every couple of days or have your neighbor watch your home for a build-up of mail/newspapers?
