just saw a news report about a swimmer in a competition who fainted

Her coach had to jump in to save her.  Guess it's the 2nd time she's had to do this.  Before the gal drowns someone should say, "no more competitions".  Never heard of this before.  How scary that is!!!

This story was just on GMA.  She is an artistic swimmer and apparently it is not uncommon for artistic swimmers to lose consciousness as they hold their breath for extended periods while engaging in vigorous activity.

Yeah, it's not that uncommon. If you watch the synchronized swimming during the summer Olympics and look at how long some of the swimmers stay submerged, it's surprising it doesn't happen more often. They're trained to ignore their bodies screaming for air and to focus on their moves and positioning instead. Ignore the scream for air a bit too long, and you pass out.

That girl should give up that sport, she has had two near misses and she's challenging fate.

I posted about it on the sports section. Probably should've put it here. The crazy thing was, there were lifeguards present who didn't even jump in to save her.
