have you ever done something scary, absurd, hilarious

and completely in character with your personality? My daughter and I like to go to Mexico.We went 4-5 years ago for 2 weeks in part to celebrate All Souls DAy and All SAints DAy. Day of the Dead--dwe stayed in a lovely hacienda in a mountain town known for its celebration of this holiday. We rented a taxi (which is the custom) to drive us to the various cemetaries in the area.

We took big bouquets of golden flowers called sempasuchil (sp) to place on the graves of those who had no families. very beautiful-- the cemetaries were full of families, candles food for themselves and foods the deceased liked--loads of flowers and at one site, a priest saying Mass.

We were placing our flowers and since it was midnight, it was very dark except for the candlelight--we didn't take flashlights--seemed impolite. well, my daughter and my friend and I were walking toward the old part, placing the yellow flowers. I took a few steps toward a couple of "forgotten" graves when I sank into the ground practically over my head--I sank into a GRAVE. i CRIED AND THE OTHER STARTED LAUGHING SO HARD THEY WERE WEAK AND COULDN'T PULL ME OUT. How about you?

Re: have you ever done something scary, absurd, hilarious

The one thing that comes to mind is when I was 10 years old, I jumped my horse over a piece of rope strung across the pasture...twice! (once in, once out). At that moment it wasn't scary, but when I thought about it later, it was the scariest thing I have ever done - if he had hooked a front or back leg, I could have killed or severely injured us both. Still gives me the heebie jeebies 40+ years later.

The other thing I thought of was when I was probably about the same age, my sister gave me a boost up onto my horse only she didn't know her own strength and boosted me right over his back! Not so funny to me at the time, but hilarious to those who saw it happen {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

A few years ago, I asked a lady at Walgreen's, ''what happened to the poster of Antonio Banderas?" She said she just threw it out. I said, '' You threw out a poster of Antonio Banderas?" I think I scared her 'cause she said, ''It's right out in the dumpster out back.'' I gave her a look and walked away. I took my van around back and spotted the dumpsters-there were two. The one with Antonio in it was just for boxes, etc, so it was clean. I spotted him at the bottom, with nothing else in the dumpster. I backed my van up and stood on the rear bumper and lowered myself into the dumpster and retrieved the poster. I was able to toss it into the back of my van and got out of the dumpster-my arms are strong I guess, 'cause I made it. Today the poster is still on the wall in my laundry room. I am kind of proud of my efforts and have told this story before, but it's still fresh in my memory.

Re: have you ever done something scary, absurd, hilarious

When I was younger, I was working in Marketing for a company that had a hot air balloon with advertising on it that went around the country for exhibits, etc. Found out that the balloon was going to be in our city for a couple of days and was offered the chance to go up. (I'm afraid of heights, don't like tall buildings and elevators, almost fainted going up the outside elevator to the top of Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta once-had a couple of drinks in the revolving restaurant on top and loved coming down!)

I helped set up the balloon for some other people to go up, and I thought there is no way I can do this! But the next day we took off from our state fairgrounds and went up 1,100 feet, I was leaning out of the basket taking pictures (holding on to one iron thing that went up from the basket to the balloon) -- we could see the whole city, the pilot was a hoot, and he took us down to the tops of trees and told us to catch the trees and see if we could stop the balloon! NOT! I know that balloons go in the direction of the wind, and I don't know how he knew the wind direction was changing, but we were low enough over a residential area where he yelled down to someone watching us and said "which way to Wilmington Delaware?" -- This guy pointed and OMG, the balloon started going in that direction. It was hilarious -- people were stopping their cars in the street and watching, dogs were barking.

When we finally came down (only two plus the pilot could go at one time), the pilot got us out along with a couple of other people who had gone up before us and were riding in the chase van, made us get down on our hands and knees and worship at his feet with our eyes closed. Then he proceeded to spray us with a bottle of champagne -- we drank the rest of it!

I'm still afraid of heights, tall buildings and elevators -- and that is probably the scariest, most adventurous thing I ever did in my life, but I'll never forget it!{#emotions_dlg.w00t}

Re: have you ever done something scary, absurd, hilarious

I jumped out of a moving car. I was going home from work and entered a traffic "circle," went to stop and my brakes gave out. I saw the stream of oncoming traffic and realized there was nothing I could do to stop the car, so I grabbed my handbag, opened the driver's door and jumped out. The car just limped along the highway and, thankfully, all of the oncoming traffic was able to stop.

Once I had a chance to cross the highway over to my car (which had bumped into some used cars and stopped), several people who had witnessed the event pulled into the car lot. I expected to be yelled at, but instead they were only concerned with whether I was hurt or not. They understood I was unable to stop the car, and I was so grateful to them all. One of them said, "I never saw anyone do that before!"

I was close enough to work to walk back there and soon everyone knew what I had done. I worked there for 24 years and that event was always remembered and talked about. To this day if I happen to talk to someone I worked with, that incident is always brought up.

Re: have you ever done something scary, absurd, hilarious

My stories are probably pretty boring compared to most. Some of the funniest things that happened to me were on dive trips.

On a trip to Palau, we had gone on one particular drift dive. On drift dives, the boatmaster keeps track of the bubbles and kind of follows along so that, at any point, when you decide to ascend and get back on the boat it's nearby.

Being a more experienced diver, I always had a lot more air than my husband and in places where they would allow it, I'd just escort him back to the boat and I'd go on and finish my dive alone because I'd still have half a tank left.

On this one dive I took the husband back to the boat. Watched him ascend and re-embark, then I took off and continued along the reef. Had a wonderful time!

It came time to consider going back to the boat so I looked around up there and saw it, so I slowly ascended (as one does) toward the boat. I break the surface right at the side of the boat and look up to see a whole bunch of Japanese guys lined up along the side looking down at me.

I'm thinking 'wow, I don't remember all these guys on our boat'. Then, of course, I fully realize that it's the wrong boat. I look up at them with my usual goofy friendliness, wave, and say 'hi'.

They all point 'over there' and I look over there to see the boatmaster and my husband laughing their butts off. oy! So I look back at all these guys, wave again, and say 'thank you'.

I descended and swam (anybody who dives knows that surface swimming sukks and swimming under the water is much better) back to the boat to find them STILL laughing at me.

It was one beautiful dive, though!! I will always remember that dive.
