Date of first Academy Awards held in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel: May 16, 1929

As for why the statue is called "Oscar", no one knows for sure although there is one theory that a librarian and future Director of the Academy saw the statue and said it looked like her Uncle Oscar.

Google also credits Bette Davis after her husband.
