Your ipod doesn't appear in Launchpad, so even if it needed an update that wouldn't cause the Launchpad icon to have a line at the bottom. Did you open the mac app store and look at updates? Not the itunes store.

Ha, now you are also puzzled

We opened the launch  pad and there amongst everything else was a pic of an I pod with a green arrow on it. 

None of it makes any sense.

Have been doing business all day and haven't had a chance to call apple.
