Re: corpse flower set to bloom in arizona

I'm surprised no one is reacting to the smell.  It's supposed to be pretty bad; helps the plant attract insects (pollinators) that feed on dead flesh.

@ValuSkr- I read a little while ago that the smell hadn’t started yet.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

@viva923

Your question made me look this up. From Wikipedia:

”carrion beetles and flesh flies are active as pollinators” so the smell attracts these.

This plant originated in the Sumatran jungle.

The crowds are still coming to see the corpse flower today.  Funny how most everyone holds their phone or tablet up, at just the right angle you know, to get a picture.  I guess it's for social media - to prove "they were there."

Tucson Botanical Gardens' corpse flower, Amorphophallus Titanum, bloomed for the first time in it's seven years of life on April 23, 2018 in Tucson, AZ. The bloom is only open 24-48 hours. Hundreds patiently lined up for the 90 minute wait. Its bloom has been cataloged less than 100 times in captivity. The Botanical Gardens brought in Charaxes butterflys who are particularly attracted to the corpse flower.
