SeaMaiden, i happen to think diane keaton is cute! and yes, up to now. i always liked her. she's actually very pretty in her sometimes quirky outfits and when she's smartly dressed. but no, i didn't say diane. this lady looked like katie holmes, whom i also find pretty.

software, i don't know if she had ingested any alcohol, if that's what you mean, but alcohol certainly was being served. i just had a mimosa. i would never consciously be rude to someone even if i had five drinks. i'd most likely be asleep in a corner! 😊

Someday I hope people finally understand the difference between PC and good manners.
It is not PC to tell an ethnic joke. It is bad manners to blow your nose at the table at a dinner party.
It is not PC to disparage someone because of the color of their skin, their sexual orientation or their gender. It is simply bad manners to give a back-handed compliment.
It's bad manners to shout in all caps on a message board.
It would be non PC if one associated said shouting with a person's ethnicity or religion.
If you are saying that ethnic slurs and the like were more accepted "back in the day", you are probably partially correct. That doesn't make it right. That means we learned something along the way because we recognize they are unacceptable.
For the OP, the compliment was likely given with the right intention, but the qualifier "for someone your age" made it awkward and a bit condescending.
I think people use non- PC as a catch all for all of the above.
It gives them the freedom to say whatever the heck they want without being called on it or having to think about the impact of their words.
Bingo. People who make disparaging cracks about "everything has to be PC these days" are just annoyed because they can no longer freely express their bigotry without negative reactions from those who find blatant bigotry offensive, and will say so. They can't "get away with it" without consequence any more.

Yup.

Actually, the less than gracious woman did the OP a favor by letting her know that what she thought a compliment, wasn't. She has prevented the OP from making future mistakes.

I don't know. They seem to have gotten a lot of backing for their non-PC ways of thinking recently.
Unfortunately.

Anything I want to say would go buh-byee.... ;-(

While I understand one doesn't go up to a woman and ask her age, to commend someone on looking so much younger or so good for their age is not offensive, when the topic is already in discussion. Period.
I'm quite frankly sick and tired of women who are hiding their clothing size or their age. It is what it is. Get over it. They are really hiding nothing, extremely self absorbed and insecure.

Once at a Christmas Party while having dinner, my niece said to her mother " OMG, mom, did you ever really look at Aunt Carmie's eyes? They are so beautiful!"
My nasty SIL said "yes, she used to be very beautiful when she was younger... before she let herself go." This SIL never even knew me when I was younger…
Everyone at the table gasped. She's also said worse things about me. How's that for a back handed compliment?

I wouldn't dream of saying that to anyone. I'm 68 and don't care who knows it. The comment was tacky and you deserved the glare. Hopefully you'll not use those 3 words again.
