cat develops tight mats in fur every spring...could cat food change help?

We have to take Mackie to have a lion cut every Spring. Yes, we brush her but this matting forms very close to the skin and is very tight. Groomer said that for dogs, certain foods are better for the fur. Is that true for cats?
